Prices for Nexium and its generic equivalent weren't available for those drugs. However, they remain $10.49 per pill.
NEW YORK (FortRx Health) -- (Nexium) and their generic equivalent, Pepcay - will likely save both the brand name and generic versions of the two drugs. They're also expected to save the least by lowering the cost of the brand-name medication by half as many as those of the generic version.
The savings are small, but big.
"Nexium and Pepcay are very similar in price," says Dr. Charles B. Schiller, chief executive of the American Heart Association, a medical device and health care policy organization. "Both drugs cost less than the brand name medications and have similar side effects."
But for some patients, the savings could be a big blow. Patients taking either of the drugs face a "black box warning" for a possible increased risk of heart attack or stroke. That risk could be fatal.
The drug's manufacturer, Merck, says that the "black box warning" on the generic drugs' labels has prompted "unnecessary and off-label" use of the generic drugs.
"There's no question that this has to be done with care," says Dr. Mark C. Fosu, a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic.
"If this is the only warning that you're getting, then the reason the company decided to do this is because the company is not aware that there is this increased risk of heart problems with the generic drugs," he adds. "They're also not aware that they are using the generic drugs to treat other problems, including aortic aneurysm."
Pepcay's brand-name drug, Nexium, was launched in 2003. It's been available generically since 2006. It's also been marketed as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) for stomach acid, but its cost is about $3.50 per pill. The brand-name drug is available as "Protonix" in generic form, which is considerably cheaper than the brand name.
"In the United States, for example, the price of generic drugs is around $1.50 per pill. We can't afford it if you're buying a brand name drug and you don't have to pay for the brand name," Schiller says.

But generic drug makers, including Merck, are negotiating prices through the federal government with drug manufacturers, insurers, and insurers and other health care providers to make the drug cheaper. "It's not going to happen," says Schiller. "You just have to work with your doctor."
In the United States, for example, the "black box warning" for generic drugs is a little different. The warning reads that a "black box warning" has been placed on the label. The generic drugs are identical. And they are sold in the same generic form as the brand-name medications. So patients who buy the generic versions of the drugs without a prescription could be buying them with no insurance.
The generic drug makers also have to convince doctors and patients that the drugs are safe and effective. "The bottom line is that patients have to come to the doctor's office and say, 'Oh, this is so I'll get a prescription for Nexium.' "
Schiller says that a "black box" warning from the manufacturer was a very different idea in 2003 than in the past. "The generic drugs have a lot of safety information about the drugs and the side effects and the cost," he says.
Schiller and his colleagues are studying what they call "black box" warnings on the labels of some drugs, which the manufacturers say are unnecessary. They will also ask patients and physicians to tell them about what's happening with the drugs.
The manufacturers say they're working with federal and state health care organizations to decide whether the drugs are safe and effective.
